we drew color wheels with chalk,
snapped grids with a chalk box,
made drawings on small canvas,
some were sewn to the big canvas,
with thread from the very canvas,
we celebrate young lives setting sail.

November 2008 - Dawn in America

Mix Mexican mural painting with Southern quilting.
Add a dash of Tibetan wall hanging and Monet waterlily.
Wrap in Twombly's childlike playful energy, and presto
- an East Dallas hip-hop graffitizzed celebration of life.

November 2008: Dawn in America, 8 feet long and 7 feet high made with
tempera paint, chalk, and markers on unstretched canvas and sewn on t-shirts,
by the kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade mural artists of John Ireland Elementary
Pleasant Grove, Dallas, TX.

November 2008 - new era dawns - so serendipitous for these little guys from Pleasant Grove as their formal education takes flight. Kindergartners, 1st, and 2nd graders from Ireland Elementary, created a work of art worthy of any contemporary gallery. Myself, along with Big Thought/Thriving Mind's Erin Adams and Lauren Punch went on a fun journey with the students. Our after school mural project had a dedicated core group of 25, but at least 40 young artists lent their pairs of hands. And some, literally gave the shirts off their backs.
